The One I Ever Had - You’re An Old Man, Young Man
I feel a changing in the wind…
Hello, World!
You’re an Old Man, Young Man is an album about change. Released in 2018 under Alex Horton’s new pseudonym The One I Ever Had, the music is very soulful in character, featuring lush orchestra sections, funky basslines, and trippy synthesizers. Written in 2017 and 2018 as a way to process the changing times, You’re an Old Man, Young Man touches on anxieties related to rising autocracy and increased automation, as well as the strength of family bonds and personal faith. Sonically inspired by classic soul artists like Isaac Hayes, The Isley Brothers, and Curtis Mayfield, the retro vibes are layered with a modern Chillwave aesthetic.
WHO IS THE PROJECT FOR?
This album was made for anyone coping with change. Every experience is individual, but we all experience changes in our lives. The project is broken into halves with the first half of the album attempting to understand the scope of today’s changes. The second half looks at the impacts those changes have on us as human beings and how we respond to change. While heavy at times, the musical character is one of vibrance with a constant glimmer of hope shining through the severity of today’s problems.

WHAT INSPIRED THE MUSIC VIDEOS & VISUAL CONTENT?
The visuals for this album are meant to stand in juxtaposition with the music subject matter. The video for “Oh My God” was filmed in St. Joe Beach, Florida only months before Hurricane Michael devastated the area, forcing many to relocate after generations in the area. We are only allowed joy if we take it. Throughout the most difficult struggles we must find joy, even if it is momentary and fleeting. The splashing of waves or the feeding of a giraffe are both small moments, but they are treasures and might not always be around.
”Let You Down” was filmed in Iceland and follows the songs lyrics describing the bonding that occurs among family members during trying times. We are all trying to escape something and visually I wanted to express that feeling.
HOW DID YOU EXECUTE YOUR IDEA? LOCATION HUNTING? EDITING? TECH SPECS? ETC.
When I write a song, I usually have some visual idea in my head of what the song looks like in the real world. When I travel I usually bring a camera with me and take those ideas and set them among different backdrops. Often time just being in a magical moment is all it takes to create an exceptional visual. I usually carry my Sony A7R II and Sony RX0 II on my person and both are easy to capture quality images quickly. My visual creative process usually involves major plot points, shot ideas, and lighting preparations. Outside of that, I lean a lot on improvisation when I film and appreciate the aesthetic of available light when the ambiance is right.
