The One I Ever Had - Pick A Color Of Your Own
The Lighter Side of Things
Hello, World!
WHAT IS THE PROJECT ABOUT?
Sometimes you have to pull yourself out of a funk with some funk. While recording You’re an Old Man, Young Man in 2018 I began working on a few random songs with a quite different vibe to even out the heaviness of that albums more serious content. When one day, my very young son asked me to “pick a color of your own” while we were playing different colored matching toys, I had a title for those songs. Pick A Color Of Your Own is me reminding myself about the joys in life. Whether it’s reminiscing on old days in Jacksonville in 2006 or exploring the exhilaration of traveling with a lover, the vibe is pure sauce all the way through. Straight dripping.
WHO IS THE PROJECT FOR?
This is for anyone who needs to chill out and relax. Whatever you do to get there this project will assist in getting you there. If you want to vibe out and reminisce on good times, this is for you. Inspired heavily by The Isley Brothers’ music of the 1970s and 80s, the retro aesthetic radiates warmth while still being so cool.
WHY SHOULD PEOPLE STREAM THE PROJECT?
If you are looking for chill low key summer barbecue vibes, then you need to steam this project.
WHEN’S THE BEST TIME TO LISTEN TO THE PROJECT?
The best time to listen to this project is during the golden hour in the evening. As the sun goes down, put your phones on airplane mode and dance in the kitchen while you and your love make a delicious meal together. When you are kicking back in a plunge pool on a giant cabana float, put this on and receive the vibe. Riding down I-10 as the sunsets? Definitely.
WHERE SHOULD WE LISTEN TO THE PROJECT?
Hello, World!
WHAT INSPIRED THE MUSIC VIDEOS & VISUAL CONTENT?
As I recorded Pick A Color Of Your Own, I relied heavily on building out vocal harmonies and ad libs to add depth and warmth to the music. When I made the video for “Wheels Up” I wanted to personify those musical parts as characters in a boy band. I rolled the green screen out, got a few changes of clothes, and began doing take after take dressed as each character. When it came time to edit, since I had already “assigned” the vocal parts to each character, I was able to showcase key expressions from each character as their part of the song came on. Give it retro background visuals and an old VHS tape aesthetic and you have some feel good vibes.
HOW DID YOU EXECUTE YOUR IDEA? LOCATION HUNTING? EDITING? TECH SPECS? ETC.
